A distinctive professional background in elite sport
Alongside his family law practice, Matt has a substantial background in elite professional sport.
That background includes officiating at the highest domestic and European levels of rugby union, together with appointments and roles in sports dispute resolution, safeguarding and regulatory settings.
It forms a distinctive part of Matt’s professional experience: one grounded in discipline, judgment and performance under pressure.
Elite Sporting Background
Before coming to the Victorian Bar, Matt officiated elite rugby in England for a number of years.
He refereed in the Gallagher and Aviva Premierships, and officiated at the highest levels of European club rugby, including the Champions Cup.
His officiating appointments included Rugby World Cup 2015, the Army v Navy match at Twickenham, and international travel for elite fixtures and tournaments, including in Japan, South Africa, the United States and Dubai.
He was directly exposed to high-performance sporting environments, including the demands of elite competition and decision-making under scrutiny.
